Difficulty Conceiving? A fertility evaluation can help!

A fertility evaluation is beneficial for couples who have had difficulty conceiving or maintaining a successful pregnancy.

This evaluation can provide answers to four basic questions and determine what problems exist and how they can be treated.

  • Is there a problem with ovulation?
  • Is there a male factor problem?
  • Are the egg and sperm able to unite?
  • Can implantation occur and be maintained?

An evaluation begins with a complete male and female medical and personal history and physical exams.

If testing is necessary, physicians typically begin with the simplest and least invasive procedures and tests. If the cause of infertility is not identified, more involved testing may be required.

A semen analysis is performed to determine if a male factor exists. Ovulatory function is assessed and appropriate tests ordered to determine problems related to ovulation.

Tests can be done to determine barriers affecting the union of the sperm and egg.

Lastly there may be problems linked to the development of the endometrial and the hormones that work to maintain pregnancy. There are treatments that can resolve these problems.

Many components must come together to achieve a successful pregnancy. Advancements in reproductive medicine over the past 25 years have given infertile couples more hope than ever before at successfully building a family. A center that specializes in reproductive medicine can assist you with your reproductive evaluation.
