How germs spread

Infections can spread a number of ways:

  • direct contact: people touching each other, kissing, etc.
  • indirect contact: food, water, etc.
  • droplets: coughing, sneezing, or shouting
  • airborne: flu, colds, and certain other viruses.

Breaking the chain to prevent transmission.

Everyone MUST wash their hands:

  • after using the toilet
  • after changing dirty diapers
  • before eating
  • before preparing meals or formula
  • after touching eyes, nose or mouth

Hand washing.

The mechanics of hand washing is the secret to good hand washing. When washing hands:

  • use running lukewarm water and liquid soap.
  • wash hands for a minimum of 20 seconds.
  • use friction when hand washing, paying close attention to the area between the fingers and around the fingernails.
  • use a paper towel to dry your hands: then use a dry paper towel to turn off the faucet.

Good common sense.

You should know:

  • how germs spread
  • how to protect yourself and your child as you provide care
  • that good hygiene practices are the key to infection control and keeping your baby healthy in the home.
